What Happened to Candy Montgomery's Husband Pat and Where Is He Now?
The new Hulu series Candy explores the death of Betty Gore in 1980 and the relationships her killer Candy Montgomery had, including the one she shared with her husband Pat Montgomery.
Pat is portrayed in Candy by actor Timothy Simons, best known for his role as Jonah Ryan on Veep. He stars opposite Jessica Biel, who takes the title role.
Here is everything you need to know about Pat Montgomery and where he is now.
What Happened to Candy Montgomery's Husband Pat and Where Is He Now?
Pat first met his wife, then Candy Wheeler, at Texas Instruments, where he worked as an electrical engineer on sophisticated military radar systems and she was a secretary.
The couple married in the early Seventies, per Texas Monthly, and they moved to Wylie, Texas, in 1977 with their son and daughter.
Candy was described by the publication as being an "army brat" who was used to moving often with her family because of her father's role as a radar technician. It was said she was eager to set down roots.
Thanks to Pat's job the family had a comfortable life with his $70,000 income ensuring that he could provide "everything Candy had ever expected"—only the routine they had settled in left her feeling "bored crazy."
It was because of this that Candy decided to embark on an affair with Betty Gore's husband Allan, an on-and-off extramarital relationship they had from late 1978 to July 1979, shortly after Gore's second daughter Bethany was born.
Prior to the affair, Candy and Pat would have arguments "more than usual," with one such argument reportedly stemming from Pat's "insensitivity" when he only glanced at A+ papers that Candy received from a writing class she was enrolled in.
The publication reported that Candy "always felt completely normal around Pat, perhaps because she was confident he would never suspect a thing" about the affair with Allan.
After Candy and Allan ended their affair her relationship with Pat continued as normal, even when she was charged with Betty's murder in 1980.
When Candy was released on bail Pat felt "heartened by the way everyone stood by them," according to a second report from Texas Monthly, and he remained supportive of his wife throughout her trial.
When Candy was found not guilty by a jury, she and Montgomery moved to Georgia. They divorced four years later, per Distractify, and Pat has remained out of the spotlight since then.
In an interview with Game Rant, actor Simons said that he chose not to meet his real-life counterpart because they had consultants who had already done so.
He explained: "We had consultants who had met the real-life people. I never talked to any one of the people who are portrayed in the show.
"Because it is a dramatization, I didn't feel like it was necessary. I just talked to the consultants who had worked on the case or were reporters, and [I] did a lot of reading."
Simons added that he felt Montgomery was an "uncomplicated" character to play, saying: "In those first couple episodes, I would joke around with Jessica about this, how my job was so easy compared to hers. Especially in that first episode because Pat's just having the time of his life, everything's going great."
The finale of Candy premieres on Friday, May 13 on Hulu.
