Alize Cornet at the 2018 US Open

At the 2018 US Open in New York City, Cornet drew much media attention after being with penalized with a code violation for briefly removing her shirt during an opening round match against Johanna Larsson of Sweden on August 28.

After returning to the court from a break, Cornet realized that she accidentally put her shirt on backwards and quickly took it off to put it on the correct way.

The move resulted in a code violation from chair umpire Christian Rask, who deemed the incident to be inappropriate.

Women’s Tennis Association rules assert that female players are not allowed to change their attire while on court. This regulation, however, doesn’t apply to male players.

The decision by Rask was quickly blasted as ‘sexist’ and drew intense criticism on Twitter and other social media platforms:

The intense heat currently gripping New York City has resulted in the implementation of a ten-minute break for all competitors as a safety precaution.

Female players are permitted to take a break between the second and third sets while male players a granted a break between the third and fourth sets.
